bowl in primark home

primark home and the bedroom refresh I didn’t plan

Last week I went into Primark for the one thing my daughter had asked me for and somehow ended up in Primark Home, emotionally attached to cushions, storage baskets and a ceramic bowl I absolutely did not need.

Somewhere between the bedding aisle and a display of photo frames, I realised how much attention I’d been giving to my bedroom recently.

Not because I’ve suddenly become an interiors expert. I’m still firmly in the DIY-novice category. But because, for the first time in years, I have the mental space to think about how I actually want my surroundings to look and feel.

And I know that sounds dramatic considering we’re technically discussing Primark.

For years, my bedroom has been simply functional. Somewhere for me and the kids to sleep, get dressed and store the things I didn’t particularly want little hands getting hold of.

It wasn’t that I didn’t want a lovely space for myself. But when you’re a solo mum and both your budget and your capacity have their limits, the practical things tend to take priority.

And so the laundry found a permanent home on a chair. Drawers became places where random objects went to disappear. Corners stayed half-finished because there was always something more urgent demanding my attention.

I became very good at making things work, even when they weren’t quite working for me.

Recently, though, I’ve started noticing those things again.

I’ve been thinking about how I use my bedroom, what I’d like to change and what might make everyday life a little easier.

Does the room feel calm? Sometimes.

Does everything have a place? Absolutely not.

My plans seem to change shape every time I think about them.

But for once, I’m actually enjoying thinking about these things.

I’m noticing colours, textures and lighting. Considering storage that might make the room more practical without making it look like an office supplies cupboard. Wondering whether a few small changes could make it somewhere I genuinely enjoy spending time.

And apparently, I’ve developed quite an interest in storage baskets.

The funny thing is, I didn’t actually buy anything from Primark Home that day.

I just found myself looking around, thinking about what I liked, what I needed and what I might want for my bedroom.

Which probably sounds like an entirely unremarkable shopping trip.

But I realised that I’d spent so long focusing on keeping everything functioning that I’d stopped thinking about whether I actually liked the spaces I was spending my time in.

My bedroom is still very much a work in progress. There are piles to sort, furniture to rearrange and approximately seventeen decisions I’ll probably change my mind about.

But I’m looking forward to making those changes.

Not because I’m trying to create a perfect home, but because I’ve started taking an interest in making my own space somewhere I love being.

And apparently, all it took to get me thinking was a trip to Primark for something my daughter needed and that I forgot to buy.
